Sustainability

Our future has a past.

Exceptional care for our guests, our communtiy and the environment
At the Hotel Schweizerhof Bern & Spa, we strive to create unforgettable experiences for our guests while actively taking measures to minimize our environmental impact. Through sustainable practices and a conscious use of resources, we are committed to an environmentally friendly future. At the same time, we care about the well-being and development of our employees, as they are the key to our success.
A great place to work
Our employees are our most important resource: satisfied guests result from the well-being of our employees. As an employer, we invest sustainably in the satisfaction, development, occupational safety and health of our teams. Our aim is to treat our most valuable asset fairly and respectfully. We communicate openly and transparently, take individual needs seriously, offer platforms for having a say and actively promote the training and development of our employees.
For the environment
With passion and commitment to global climate protection, we actively invest in internal resource and energy efficiency. One outstanding example of this is the care of up to 150'000 bees on the roof of our hotel. This measure not only helps to combat bee mortality, but also provides 85 kg of organically produced honey every year - which is used at breakfast and in our fascia massage in the spa. These sustainable practices reflect our commitment to excellence in hospitality and a positive contribution to the environment.
Corporate Social Responsibility
It is important to us to lead the Hotel Schweizerhof Bern & Spa sustainably into the future. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is therefore an integral part of our corporate strategy. We want to show how we take our responsibility seriously and are committed to sustainable development in the luxury hotel industry.
Awards & certificates
We are grateful for the recognition of our commitment to environmental protection and social responsibility. Having obtained Green Globe Certification and being part of Swisstainable reflects our dedication to sustainability. Among the LHW, we are honored to be recognized as a Sustainability Leader.
myclimate
Since 2017, we have been cooperating with the myclimate foundation to make a joint contribution to climate protection. When booking or checking in, our guests have the option of deciding whether they would like to offset their CO2 emissions. By making a donation of CHF 4.00 per person per night, they can offset their entire stay, with the amount donated by guests being doubled by the hotel. Our primary goal is to reduce deforestation in Madagascar. We use the funds raised to purchase solar stoves, replant trees and promote environmental awareness among locals to encourage sustainable use of our resources.
The Green Busters
The hotel's own environmental group "The Green Busters" has been regularly implementing exciting projects on the topics of the environment, climate protection and resource efficiency since 2017. They inform their colleagues on the internal hotel tool "Beekeeper" with weekly posts on how they can make their everyday lives more environmentally friendly.
Recycle & reuse
Schweizerhof Candles
By recycling the leftover candles from our restaurant "Jack's Brasserie" into new Schweizerhof candles, we are making a further contribution to the environmentally friendly and sustainable use of our resources.
SapoCycle
We have been working with the SapoCycle foundation for several years now, which gives our used hard soaps a new purpose: The soap bars are not thrown away after use, but are recycled by hand in the social workshop "Wohnwerk". They are donated to people in need via aid organizations.
Eat local - be local
In our market presence, we actively assume social responsibility and are committed to the well-being of our fellow human beings. When selecting our partners and suppliers, we attach great importance to ensuring that they meet our high quality standards for services and products. Our purchasing philosophy "Eat local - be local" emphasizes personal relationships with our suppliers and partners as well as the importance of regionality, seasonality and sustainability as key aspects.

Green Bern
Did you know that Bern is the second greenest capital city in Europe? The city has been committed to the sustainable use of energy and resources for years. In 2019, Bern was awarded the "European Energy Award Gold" in recognition of its exemplary commitment to a sustainable energy future. The city has held the title of "Fair Trade Town" since 2017. With this award, Bern continues to strive to take a leading position as a growing, creative, environmentally conscious, cosmopolitan and social city in Switzerland.
Social engagement
Foodsave-Banquet
Together with around 30 organizations that are committed to the careful handling of food, we organize the annual Food Save Banquet. A menu cooked from food waste is served at a 60-metre-long table on Bahnhofplatz in Bern. The aim of this event is to raise public awareness of food waste in private households.
Clean Up Days
The Hotel Schweizerhof Bern & Spa takes part in the annual Clean Up Day. As part of this day, our colleagues collect garbage in the station district and set a sustainable example against littering and for a clean Switzerland.
A sustainable collection
From the day the first hotel in Bürgenstock Collection opened we had ambitious environmental designs. By 1888 we introduced a groundbreaking electric funicular and hydroelectric power to our 500-metre-high Bürgenstock mountainside. Our story began with two entrepreneurs from local villages, creating a legacy of community spirit, while Switzerland’s snow peaked Alps are a constant reminder of our responsibilities to the planet. Sustainability is a true pillar of the Bürgenstock Collection and our vision begins with our guests’ desire to travel well in this precious world.
